How to clean poop off of carpet in 3 easy steps.

As The Mayor of Poopville, I feel it imperative to share the following cleaning tip.

Pink Ninja, is in the process of toilet raining, and becoming a nudist...go figure.

I am sorry to report, she has had a couple of accidents. One in front of friends. (Thanks, Pink Ninja for keeping Mom's coolness factor in check, I am sure I did not need the help). The other accident apparently "happenned" sans witnesses.

First of all I tried using "resolve" brand. It does not work.

Googleing "how to clean baby poop off of carpet", only leads to finding other Moms with the same problem.

I did find this GEM

Anyway, when I was a nurse I recalled using hydrogen peroxide to remove fresh blood out of my white uniform hundreds of times. So I tested the carpet in the closet to see if it would bleach or fade the color. Carpet was fine.

1)So remove all of the "solid waste".

2)Apply peroxide.

3)gently dab area with a white cloth.

There are sooo many lessons I would prefer not learning.

*disclaimer* ArmyWifeToddlerMom and those associated are not responsible for any ruined carpet, PLEASE test area first!!

Took a day off work for my wife to travel for a job. Home with the kids for less than 1 hour and my 18-month-old had pooped all over herself and the floor. Went to town with baby wipes, but those only went so far. Google search yielded your site. I guess ArmyWifeToddlerMom=Queenofpoopremovalfromcarpet.

Thanks a ton for the help.

This has worked amazingly! My dog had the worst smelling diarrhea and went right on my mother’s new library carpet. After scrubbing the carpet several times with detergent, it still smelled awful. I used your method and the horrible smell lifted right up!! THANK YOU,

OUTSTANDING! Thank you so much for posting this! It is a Godsend for sure. My 2 year old left a huge poop stain in her bedroom carpet. I tried everything to get it out, but it is still there. Today, my baby had a diaper accident in the LIVING ROOM! I googled and found this, followed the peroxide solution, and woolah! it worked wonderful! thanks so much for posting this. Maybe you should consider gathering lots of these and writing a book! i'd buy it! :-) God bless you and your family. michelle

Thanks so much for your post. I'm dad, spending all day with the kids at my mom's house, and sure enough 2 year old Dylan poops on her carpet! She's a nurse too, and sure enough has some hydrogen peroxide in the cupboard. Worked like a charm.

I had my first poop on carpet experience today and found this solution before trying any others, thankfully. It worked like a charm. :)

I found that mixing the peroxide with a little dishwashing liquid and spraying that on worked even better.

Thanks so much! HP is amazingly simple stuff. Thank goodness you were the first link I clicked on. I didn't even bother checking other links.

I do find it hard to believe this is a top blog because of the poop question! That is amazing! LOL

Thank you so much! I was just in my 2 year old sons room trying to clean the poop off the carpet and am in tears and overwhelmed. I have 4 children and never had this problem before but pt him is a nightmare. He poops on the floor and if I don't catch it first he pulls his shirts out of the drawer and smears it into the carpet and tries to clean it! What a mess! Again thank you and I am on my way out the door to buy some peroxide!

Anonymous said...

WOW!! That really works. Our darling boy thought it would be fun to rub the contents of his diaper all over the carpet in his room. He was supposed to be napping.

Thank you SO much!!

Thank you! I tried baking soda to counter the smell (it works great with coffee stains) but it didn't but take off the edge of the poop mess and smell. Husband found this tip online and called the neighbor for back up bottle of HP. Worked wonders! Thank you again!

worked like a charm! Thank you!! This is my first time dealing (and I'm sure not last) with baby poop on the carpet.

Anonymous said...

I never believed this could work so well! I tried everything to remove a bad poop stain on a light coloured wool carpet; probably making it worse and setting the stain in! I read your tip and got some HP from the local chemist. I tested a a bit first for colour fastness and it seemed OK. It took 4 bottles dumped on the stain to remove it but each time, the stain faded and now it is hardly visible at all - (you would have to know to see where it was!) I cannot thank you enough! The HP has not bleached the carpet at all and has worked like a charm! (So many people warned me against using HP - including a professional carpet cleaner who said it would bleach my carpet - but in desperation, I ignored them and am so pleased that I followed your advice - I will now always keep a bottle of HP in the cupboard! many, many, thanks!

This tip truly is a lifesaver-I did not have a carpet stain, but a brand new puppy who left poop stains on MY MATTRESS, of course right before bedtime!!! I was freaking out, couldn't find any other tips-there really is nothing else out there. I tried it-and it worked like magic...thank you so much for being there when I needed it.

Thank you. My 7 yr. old autistic daughter just made a hugh mess on the carpet in my bedroom. She even rubbed it in with her hands. I had no idea how to get it out. I read you advice and went to get 2 bottles of hydrogen peroxide at the store. It only took about half a bottle. I could seeit foaming up on the carpet, but didn't harm the carpet color at all. Thanks.

I had been looking for a site to share my valuable nuggets of information being a Navy Wife and Toddler Mommy (LOL) anyway, thanks for the tip which ultimately lead to me finding this site... here's some helpful tips in trade ;-)

1C. Hydrogen Peroxide + 3T Baking Soda + 1 drop dawn = a way to get pee stains out of a mattress. Simply mix well and pour immediately on the stain. (works with old stains too!) Let air dry and by the time its dried the stain will be gone- simply vacuum up any remaining baking soda residue. (*please NOTE- do not store mixture! It will explode!)

Use a little Dawn and let it sit for a little bit then shampoo up with carpet cleaner to get diaper rash cream out of carpet (zinc oxide type).

Dawn also works at getting grease stains out of my little guys clothing (*even after drying in the dryer and on stains months old!) Just let sit for a bit before tossing back in the washing machine. I usually do 24 hrs or so but I'm sure 1-2 hrs would do the job.

This worked amazing! Thank you so much.
I will say this I decided to use paper towels instead of a plain white washcloth. The paper towels had some green print on them which eventually left a slight green tent, I was able to get it out after just using the HP over and over again.
So I would definitely recommend using something ALL white so that the colors don't bled on the carpet. But it did eventually all come up....thanks again!

A big thank you from this Navy Mom of 2 toddlers in a rental house...they should charge a deposit for kids, not pets! My parents are coming to visit tomorrow, so as I frantically clean, the little darling naturally drops a puddle of poo in the middle of the living room! I'd like to second that Resolve does not work. Your tip worked wonders, but makes me see how dirty the rest of the carpet is :) c'est la vie ~ It's a rental.

At the risk of sounding redundant, I was skeptical that hydrogen peroxide could work such miracles. I had already tried Woolite OxyDeep which only lightened the stain. I imagined that anyone who saw it would know what it was. I was desperate since we are having a party at our house in a week. In the time it took to pour on the hydrogen peroxide and blot it up the stain was gone. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. You have made a difference in my life.

It worked! My cat usually has no problem, but when she does she is nice enough to go on a piece of paper, towel, or something else I can throw away or wash. Unfortunately I walked in my room without the lights on and stepped in it and then onto the carpet. This got it out on the first try! And it did work on blood too! Thanks so much!

My poor puppy decided that rather than getting his WASHABLE BED dirty that he would point his back-end out of his crate and all over my red-woven rug.

Lord knows, cleaning the bed wouldn't be easier than the rug...(my sarcasm runneth over)

Is the peroxide safe (generally) on darker color rugs?

So... I am not a mom, but it was a rainy day today and I assumed that it would be okay to have the dogs in my room for a couple hours. I brought them up to my room, set them down and closed the door. I rinsed my hands with soapy water and then opened my bedroom door. My two pugs were looking at me, wagging their tails... standing over huge logs. I later discovered a yellow puddle on the seat of my chair. Thanks for the life-saving advice!

My 2-year-old pooped in two different places on my living room rug. His rash was so bad, I thought, better on the floor than in his diaper. Anyways, I said a prayer to help me through this day and not only did God remind me how awesome breast milk is for a rash remedy, your search was the first one that popped up for cleaning poop. I had recently purchased Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide for other uses. What are the odds? It worked beautifully! Thank you for the tip!

First, thanks! Next, I would like to say that I tried this on a dark green and also a maroon colored carpet and it did not affect the color at all. After trying it several different ways I found that you don't have to worry about putting too much on although it is not necessary to oversoak - just put enough on to wet the area, let it bubble for a couple seconds and then wipe it up. Awesome!

Thanks for the HP tip! ****Remember all you frustrated poo cleaners out there that the most important thing in this situation is that the child does not feel bad about them selves! It is possible to explain to them how serious it is and what not to do w/out them feeling bad - It is just another example of how we can teach them how to cope and handle a situation. I found my son downstairs reading books on the carpet w/ poop all over. after showering and scrubbing him off and marking off the "poop scene", I could see the anxiety on his face. With out yelling at him I explained how yucky poop is and that if he ever gets it on his hands to stick his arms straight out and yell for a grown up to come help. I told him that it could make him very sick if it got in his mouth. We talked about how it was an accident and how to handle it next time - he even acted it out w/ me by sticking his hands out. I remember my Mom telling me when that when my sister was potty training she went in the corner of the room on the carpet and she yelled & how that can really have a serious emotional effect on a child. Sorry to go on & on but I hope that maybe this helps somebody before they let there temper get the best of them. As parents we sure have to check our selves constantly - the hardest job in the world!!

The hydrogen peroxide DOES work for blood. I had a pregnant dog who decided to have her first puppy in the middle of my bedroom floor instead of in her nice bed I made for her. I cleaned up as much as I could and got the peroxide after the rest. It got it all out of my almost white carpet with no visible stains.

The poop however, is deeming to be a little more difficult. I used scalding water, my pro heat carpet shampooer along with the peroxide but you can still see a faint stain. Any other suggestions to get those really tough stains out?

Anonymous said...

I am sooo grateful that I found this blog. It worked like magic. This was the second time in the last 2 weeks that my 2 1/2 yr old decided to remove her diaper and wipe her fanny on the carpet to remove the poop. Hopefully she doesn't do it again, but if she does I now know a MUCH easier way to remove it! AMAZING!!!

Somehow painting in your on poo seems more fun to my 22 month old than playing with the many toys that he has in his room.

Thank you! I haven't tried this yet but hoping it works... thankful some one was brave enough to admit this and give tips! Yesterday was one of the very overwhelming and stressful days. As I'm cooking dinner, my three year old (who has been going on the potty since Father's Day) decided it'd be fun to poop on the carpet in the play room and cut it up with a play knife and serve it to his 14 month old sister. Awesome, right? I got what I could in a hurry and sealed off the room... now off to tackle it with hydrogen peroxide. Wish me luck!

I'm so happy I found this info! Two days ago, I had to do a bowel prep for my first colonoscopy, which meant having to get to the bathroom on very short notice. I took the precaution of putting 4 old, thick towels in my bed, where I rested between visits to the bathroom. Unfortunately, I fell asleep from exhaustion for 15 minutes or so. My sphincter relaxed and before I woke up, what should have gone in the toilet went onto my bed. It soaked through the towels, fitted sheet and mattress pad all the way down into the mattress. What a mess!

Yesterday, I tried to clean the mattress with the expensive cleaning kit that I bought with the mattress. It cleaned the visible spots, but left the nasty poop odor. I tried vinegar and water, but that didn't work, either. After finding your blog, I used the HP and the smell is gone! Thanks so much!!

I'm potty-training my third son, whose bowel movements are usually soft/runny (I think he has a food allergy). I'm so glad I found your post when I was potty-training my first son. Because of several hurricanes in the past seven years, we have had to replace all of our carpet, and I am tired of spending money on carpet! This post has been a sanity-saver.

I simply can't thank you enough for your help! We just moved into our new house not two weeks ago, so I'm still in that, "This house will stay clean so help me GOD!" phase. My daughter laid a big stinky at the foot my bed this morning... I was furious. Our carpet is a light beige color so you can imagine how difficult it is to keep clean. My first instinct was to consult Google (I practically worship Google) and I'm so glad I did. Thanks to your advice there's no stain, and it didn't even take much scrubbing. Thank you sooooo much for posting this. You truly saved my carpet!

This is a God send today! My daughter pooped in a racecar toy, then her and my son spread it all over the carpet, all within 3 minutes while I went to get juice for them. She did this in her room once a while back, and I had the hardest time getting it out. Wish I had known about this then, but so thankful to know it now before next time (as I am sure my son will at one point do this as well) Also, this worked great for old dried stains that were on my carpet! :)

Thanks so much. I had old furniture removed so new furniture could be delivered and found some old dog poop! Too late to call the carpet cleaner. I found your site and cleaned it up lickety- split. Thank y0u thank you thank you!!!!

After her last double digit birthday, my "roommate" (I am never called the "caregiver") had diahrrea in two different rooms! Used a bottle product but large stain still apparent. NOW will apply HP. THANK YOU.

Thank you so much for this! I swear by my bissell cleaning solution, but it wasn't doing the trick tonight. Our 11 year old setter is getting arthritic and it seems worse after leaving her in the crate. I left her out today out of guilt and came home from a long, tiring day to some of the worst poop I've ever seen on white carpet. I was ready to cry and my search pulled you up first.

Thx so much you saved my job,

OMG! daughter and sweet dog visiting. Three big poop places on the white carpet in the morning! Thank goodness for the internet and Armywife. It has becoe my go-to place for solving cleaning disasters. I would have attached with water and vinegar but your suggestion of Peroxide is the beat! I used white rags and more elbow grease than I would have liked at 7 a.m But the spots are gone. I will now deal with the odor You saved us! Thanks.

I just used your suggestions on a darker rug. It worked like a charm, thanks! As of now, it hasn't faded the rug at all and the stink is GONE! Thank you, thank you!

My 3 month old pooped on our bed and all over our white carpet. This worked great, a little too great. Now there's a very white spot on our "white" carpet. It got the carpet so clean, we have to clean the rest of the carpet! I didn't realize how dirty our white carpet was...

Oh no! I tested! I truly did! (and the carpet in the cuppboard was fine!!!) And later in the day I put peroxide on the poop, instantly it turned an orange colour, despite my dabbing - is that because it reacte to the poo? I'm too scared to reapply peroxide!!

Oh my god. how Happy as a clam can a baby be when playing in here own feces!!! oh my ... i entered the room with a suspicion that, if she is playing this contentedly and i am feeling peace, and delight, and a breath of fresh air kicking my feet up on the couch for a minute... it cant be.. i bet there may be poop.. and there was! i get so tired of wrenching my back because she is strong, my little 8 month old, wrestling and wriggling like a gladiator when ive got to put the diaper on her. so i heard the words of her great grandnanny saying "oh, just let her be nakey! let her be free for awhile, she needs to breath down there" so i did.. to save my back.. and went downstairs to switch the laundry and come back and oh yes poop. all over. she trailed it to her diaper box where she was kneeling and playing with clean diapers, poop in hand.. on foot.. on leg... on tummy.. needless to say i cleaned her up and left her in the tub (waterless) while i googled this mess. thank goodness! i trusted this advice so i walked to the store and the first grocery store i went to didnt have any peroxide that i could find, i had reached for a few arm and hammer products by intuition i guess but.. decided against it.......then saw SPOT SHOT the pet stain remover my dad swears by... "go with what you know" ? ... i wasnt sure! i finally left after changing my mind a few times, after putting the scrub brush back, and just went to cvs to buy hydrogen peroxide and spend money on new towels to be used to clean up poop... that seemed funny to me................ it smells at the moment! im so glad though it seems to be working, and it lifted the remaining feces to the top of the carpet that was pretty cool. but it smells, but maybe itll go away........... im so glad i ended up just buying what u said plain old H.P. because i dont feel like i wasted money! anyway we'll see...... :) i have to admit i wasnt mad, i laughed... when i saw her with a wake of poop smeared in patches all over the carpet behind her....... she was having such a good time too.

Unknown said...

I'm not sure yet if the smell will go away..... so far it lifted the feces to the top of the carpet and it looks great! i cleaned it i mean :P haha. yay cheap cleaning fixes!

Yes, the peroxide does work wonders! My own little added tip that I find helps, remove all the actual poop from the carpet of course, dab it up with a wet paper towel/baby wipe, then i go ahead with dawn dishsoap and cold water, use some paper towel to soak that up...then i hit it with the peroxide and it's as if it never even happened! Peroxide was definitely a fantastic idea. I'm a little anal, so, I do have certain processes when cleaning particular things. Peroxide is a great finishing touch! I feel as though these "accidents" happen way too often for me, but we are in the very early stages of potty training and I like to give her some time to "breathe". So, THANK YOU!
P.S. (peroxide/amonia/alcohol also works wonders for many things! I learned that from a good neighbor of mine.)

Wow! I have three teenage kids, but never had poop on my carpet. Ever! Thankfully, my kids kept it in their diapers or put it in the toilet where it belongs! But, I do have a dog...he must of had an upset stomach, because I have 3 little spots with wet, soggy dog poop. It had the opportunity to get kind of dry and crusty while I was gone. I'm going to give the peroxide a try before I go out and buy something else. Hope I have the success the other's have had! :)

Peroxide will also clean vomit out of carpet. My six year old got sick on the carpet on night #2 in our brand new home. Peroxide and a rented rug doctor cleaned it right up. Don't leave the peroxide on more than just a few minutes or it can bleach.

dear army wife, this really helped me alot because i do have greyhounds and they made a big mess on the carpet and it worked wonders to get it out. thank you so much.

Staying at my parents house with my "senior" dog, when I was awakened this early am by the unmistakable stench of dog poo. Sure enough she shat on the new carpet in our bedroom, and unfortunately it was loose like chocolate pudding. I was horrified because my dad is a old curmudgeon and if he found out it would be curtains for both of us. Thankfully the HP worked, although I also applied some Nivea Gel shaving cream to cut the odor. (the febreze Hawaiian Aloha helped also). Thanks again!

This is absolutely amazing!! Was gonna call a pro in the am but saw this first!! Decided to try it and it worked wonders! Color is back to normal on my light carpet!

Thank you!!! My dog stepped in his poop outside and when he got in the house he went running for our brand new ivory rug! Of course my husband asked again why I decided to buy a light colored rug. I have used hydrogen peroxide before for blood stains, but didn't even think about it for POOP! It worked perfectly! I now keep a bottle with my cleaning supplies! Thank you from Brooke and Scrappy the dog in Ft Lauderdale, FL :)

Oh man, thanks Army Wife!! Wow, taking care of my sister's greyhound and his first night over he diarrhea-ed all over my living room and hall (both carpeted). We read you blog and bought two giant bottles of HP for like 2 dollars!!! so cheap. There were so many poop stains we were able to experiment with OxiClean, this Blu-Coral heavy duty carpet cleaner, and HP. No contest HP dominated the poop. We ended up waiting for the other stuff to dry and then cleaned up the stains of the other stain removers with HP. You should win a Nobel prize for helping so many people.

My husband tried this on our bathroom rug, where I had an accident and left a couple of poop stains, but it has not worked...yet. Neither has it "bubbled" as a few comments stated. All we can think is that maybe it is because of all of the medictions that I take - A LOT! Any comments?

AWESOME!!!! Came home to my dog's surprise! wanted to get clean before my husband comes home and had no sort of carpet cleaner. Found this and am sooo thankful!! Now my hubby can come home without getting mad at the dog for once

Dear ARMYWIFETODDLERMOM!!!!!!!!!!

Ma'am!!!!!! !! YOu saved my LIFE! I had an accident in my office (I'm disabled), and the loose stool stained the light colored rug. And it didn't smell nice either!

I cleared up what I could with a few sheets of paper towel from the roll.

I went to the utility room and got a spray bottle and a wire brush on a broomstick; to the bathroom and got some Hydrogen Peroxide and some Dr. Bronner's castile soap that was under the sink.

I put about a third of the bottle of peroxide, and a third cup of the castile soap in the bottle and shook it gently a few times.

I sprayed the stains and used several paper towels to blot it up.

Then i came back withplain HP and repeated. careful not to get it too wet at any point.

Then I resprayed and used the brush in short gentle strokes and it foamed a little. I then spread a towel over the entire area, and "walked" on it in my chair.

I then tossed the bag of dirty paper towels into the garbage.

Thanks to you, my dignity is intact, nobody even knows it happened. I always have a change of clothes in my office, went to the men's room, took a quick shower, got dressed and wasn't even missed.

Even though I'm disabled, i was able to manage to handle this by my self!!!!!!! I can't get on the ground to scrub on my hands and knees... well I could, but it ain't PRETTY!

Your remedy prevented me from being helpless, or having to call for assistance in this embarrassing situation!

I Thank you ma'am!

I didn't have any peroxide, so I used baking soda and vinegar. I sprinkled a very small amount on the carpet, rubbed it in just a little, then I poured some vinegar on the spot. I let it bubble for a few moments and then scrubbed the spot until the stain was gone!! I was absolutely relieved.

Hydrogen Peroxide is an amazing all around solution - not sure why, in all the years I've advocated for it, I didn't think to try it. So glad to have found this post - and yes, it was #1 in Google's search results for 'how to deal poop in carpet'. So apparently, and per all of the comments, I am not alone in my delemma. Thanks for sharing :)

Yep, worked for me as well!!! Thanks a million!

thank you so much for this post and thread... I didn't have hydrogen peroxide on hand so I used the 1/2 scoop of Oxiclean in a coffee cup of warm water tip. Took mere minutes. There is a light smell that I will take care of with the hydrogen peroxide as soon as I can hit the store. <3
