Last night when I returned from church I found my e-mail brimming with this
"The Nickelodeon news series Nick News with Linda Ellerbee is looking for kids of soldiers currently home from deployment who are willing to be interviewed about the readjustment process. Were looking for a few well-spoken kids around 11 to 15 years old to talk about how life has changed now that Mom/Dad has come home - particularly those dealing with a physical injury, divorce or PTSD. This show will recognize that war affects whole families, acknowledge the sacrifices of American troops and their families - especially their kids, and portray the good feelings that come with being reunited. Filming will be completed by the end of February.
Interested families please contact Coordinating Producer Jessie Findlay at Lucky Duck Productions - 212-463-0029 ext. 153 or jessie@nicknews.com. "
If anyone is seriously considering contacting Nickelodeon, I would have them watch this program,
Rebels with a Cause.
which no longer is hyperlinked.
Update: 2/8/07 Sculley's Mother found the piece. Thank you. I will also add the images are not safe for children. However I do want those who have not seen it, to be able to view it, and make up your own minds. Is this appropriate television for 5am on Nickelodeon? BTW, it appears that this is only an excerpt from the original piece, but is disturbing.

AWTM,
Thanks for yet another important alert. I suspect this will be more of the same, with a vengeance.
God bless you and your vigilance.
[shudder] I hope nobody gets sucked into letting their child be exploited by this... person.
my post to Nick: "I have heard a rumor that Linda Ellerbee was recruiting children of veterans for a progam on the war's impact on kids. I also heard was looking especially for those who suffered from PTSD, traumatically injured parents or divorce. This sounds like a hatchet job using children as tools of a political agenda, not a kid's news show. I hope it isn't true. Perhaps she should talk to my son. I spent 2 years in Iraq. He got straight A's..."
As a USAF military brat I find Hollywood's attempt to exploit our status contemptible. We are born and raised in a warrior culture. My dad loves me so much he wanted to go out and make the world a safer place for me. No one knows what it's like to be us. How dare they.
More accentuating the negative from Linda Ellerbee. She never did impress me. I looked high and low for a link to "Rebels with a Cause" and came up empty. I guess Nickelodeon knows it's controversial, which begs the question as to why a children's channel would run the thing in the first place.
I am going to write Nickelodeon, though. I resent Ellerbee's politicization of soldier's through their children. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together knows that soldiers are not political.
Ok. Time to marinate the steak 'caus I'm stuck tuna casserole tomorrow.
I posted the alert on Hooah Wife and then Soldiers Angels LA - then I recalled the name Ellerbee - checked back here and you were already on it! Someone will participate unknowingly, so the best we can do is try to educate the poor people that get sucked in ahead of time. I wish I could sign up so I could rip her a new one!
Is she also recruiting children whose mother/father are NOT suffering from PTSD, a physical injury or divorce? Is she also interested in speaking with and showcasing children who will say, "I am so happy my [Dad][Mom] is home... and if we have problems we will get through it... together... as a family." ??
Perhaps instead of ignoring her (and leaving the field wide open to the few malcontents), every military parent and child should send their name to Ellerbee and her organization -- overwhelm them with the POSITIVE and the GOOD. I wouldn't hold my breath that she would actually AIR the good stories (I won't hold my breath 'cause I don't look good in blue), but just maybe -- maybe -- she would figure out that military families are a group of fine, loving, caring, happy individuals who ALL serve our country -- collectively protecting the right of people like Elerbee to be ... well, wrong!
